Part of Shopify vs Magento for CRO: a UK store owner comparison

Shopify vs Magento for CRO: a UK store owner comparison

How Shopify and Magento differ for conversion rate optimisation in UK stores, covering theme control, checkout changes, apps, payments and test design.

What to take away

  • Shopify keeps the checkout on a hosted rail, so most conversion work lands on product pages, collections, the cart and the apps you install.
  • Magento, sold now as Adobe Commerce, gives template and checkout control; UK licences, hosting and developer time typically run to five figures a year.
  • Payment setup, including Stripe, PayPal, Klarna, Worldpay and Opayo, often moves conversion more than the platform badge does.

Shopify versus Magento: CRO control compared

The two platforms differ less in what they can display than in who owns the checkout, the server and the release process.

Shopify CRO limitations to plan around

Shopify is a hosted product, so the checkout is a feature you configure rather than a file you edit. On standard plans that sequence stays largely closed, and testing stops at the cart.

That pushes effort upstream. Product page layout, delivery messaging, size guidance and the cart drawer carry most of the gain.

Every installed app adds scripts to pages you are trying to speed up, and some touch the cart.

Contact and address fields still belong to you outside the checkout. Cutting the number of fields, and saying why each one is needed, is lawful data minimisation as well as a faster form.

If your address step is the weak point, the guide to ecommerce form optimisation sets out which fields UK shoppers tolerate.

The ICO's UK GDPR guidance sets out the minimisation principle behind that advice, and it applies to every form you publish.

Magento CRO flexibility and the bill that follows

Magento, now sold as Adobe Commerce, keeps an open-source core and hands the server and templates to you. The Wikipedia entry on Magento describes that history and the move into Adobe's product line.

Checkout fields, layout and the release process are yours to change, which suits stores running continuous tests.

It also means upgrades, hosting and page speed land on your team. Typical UK quotes put Magento hosting at £200 to £800 a month, Adobe Commerce licences in the tens of thousands of pounds a year, and developer time at £350 to £600 a day.

Payments, apps and the UK rule layer

  1. Decide which payment methods UK customers expect, including Klarna, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Worldpay and Opayo, then check which ones the gateway supports natively.
  2. Test the payment and address steps on a mid-range Android phone, since that is where most baskets are abandoned.
  3. List every app that touches the cart or checkout, because each is a dependency in any test.
  4. Write down the lawful basis for each field you collect, then delete the ones you cannot justify.
  5. Check the gateway's fee structure, because fees that shift with turnover belong in the same model as your test results.

Matching the platform to the test you intend to run

Write the next six tests before you choose. Product page, copy and offer tests run happily on Shopify. Tests that reach into checkout, search or the account area need Magento's control.

On Shopify, add a Klarna message and a delivery promise to the product page, then run it as a theme variant in Intelligems or VWO.

A test that needs checkout access, such as a guest checkout default or a field order change, sits in Magento's checkout templates.

Most UK stores get their first real gain from the product page, and the product page CRO guide sets out the order to work in.

Common questions

Does Shopify restrict conversion testing?

On standard plans, largely, because the checkout is hosted and closed. Tests still run on product pages, collections and the cart.

Is Magento better for conversion rate optimisation?

The platform does not set your conversion rate. Magento offers more control and maintenance, while Shopify offers faster change with fewer levers.

Do payment gateways matter more than the platform?

For plenty of UK baskets they do. A familiar card flow and a working wallet option remove friction that no template edit can reach.

Can a small UK store justify Magento?

Rarely on size alone. Justify it with a backlog of tests that need server or checkout access, and with the budget to keep the platform current.
